Make good use of that sewing machine
If you have a sewing machine but you’re not sure how to unlock its full potential, here’s a good way to put it to work. Create your own wardrobe!
Here’s why you should consider crafting your own stylish clothing.
Benefits of sewing your own clothes
- Tailored clothing made just for your body
- Choose the fabric and styles that suit your personality and body type
- Avoid “fast fashion” and the environmental damage that goes with it
- Learn a new skill
- Have fun and make friends in group sewing classes
- Make high-quality clothing that lasts for years
Ideas for patterns and fabric
Pattern and fabric choice are all-important elements of making your own clothing. That’s why from time to time we publish blogs and videos that show you some patterns and fabrics that pair very well. Then, we show you how the results look on non-models.
If you need help with this critical starting point, come into ABQ Sewing Studio in Strathroy, Ontario, or contact us if you don’t live in the area. We can still help, and you can purchase patterns and fabrics from our online store.

Learn from an experienced sewing teacher
You may be wondering if you will be able to master the skills necessary to make clothing you will actually want to wear. That’s where ABQ Sewing Studio comes in.
Our expert instructors and spacious classroom give you the guidance and space to sew your own clothes with confidence. In our classes, we’re dedicated to helping you grasp the art of sewing with finesse.
We have classes for every skill level, but many of our classes are tailored (yes, I said it) for beginners like you who have a sewing machine and some sewing skills and are keen to take the plunge into garment sewing, but need some guidance and encouragement to be sure you’re doing things correctly.
We offer a capsule sewing class, for instance, that helps you master the creation of pants, tops, and jackets – a complete wardrobe ensemble!
We’ve even had a class called Upcycling Green Style that included a field trip to a thrift store. Learning proper garment sewing techniques from an experienced teacher opens up a world of possibilities, both for making new clothing and upcycling used clothing.
ABQ helps at every step of the way
Most classes we offer are based on a particular pattern, but we also have Sew Anything Saturdays, where you pay by the hour and get help with your project.
We’ll help you choose a pattern, if necessary, or help you get the correct size of the class pattern based on your measurements.
Once you have the pattern, it’s time to choose fabric. We carry a variety of fabrics perfect for sewing garments and will help you make the best decision for the pattern you’re making based on your preferences.
Be sure to leave time between the day you choose your fabric and class day because you need time to launder and press the fabric before class. If you need help with the cutting process, we’ll guide you along.
You’ll get guidance throughout the class that ensures you’ll end up with clothing that looks great and will last for years.
