About our online bag-making lessons

In these video sewing classes, you’ll go through the process of making a project step by step. Lessons are broken down into usable installments. Instead of following one long video, you’ll complete a step, then move onto the next lesson.

Follow along as designer Brenda Miller and expert instructor Kelley Richardson show you how to make ABQ patterns. Kelley teaches the Bucket Bags class and Brenda teaches the bags.

Handbag, purse, tote, wallet, storage

The beauty of sewing your own bag is that you get to choose the fabric and finish, and the result is one-of-a-kind.

Classes include

  • Complete pattern included in your class purchase—no need to buy separately
  • Step-by-step video lessons broken down into manageable segments
  • Access anytime on your computer, tablet, or smartphone

What you need to take a class

If you’ve ever made a garment or a quilt, you should be fine. No previous bag making experience is required, because everything is described in the video.

You should have a sturdy home sewing machine that is in good working order. The machine does not need to have any fancy stitching capabilities.

Sewing bags involves some heavy seams, so it should be able to handle some bulk but certainly does not need to be an industrial machine.

Intermediate skill level

These classes are designed for people with intermediate sewing skills who:

  • Can follow basic sewing directions for pinning, basting, and stitching
  • Know how to use rotary cutting tools
  • Understand pressing techniques
  • Enjoy being creative with fabric

Equipment & Supplies

  • A sturdy home sewing machine in good working order
  • 90/14 Topstitch needle or 90/14 Jeans needle
  • Basic sewing supplies (scissors, pins, fabric markers)
  • A complete tool list is provided with each class

Three tips for enjoyable sewing

Be sure to read all the preparation instructions included with the class before you begin. These tips apply in general:

  • Check your measurements and cutting directions before cutting
  • Label each cut piece as you go
  • Work with ample lighting for a more productive and pleasant experience

What students are saying

“Brenda’s bag patterns are the best!” -Jill Doucet Dewar

“You are an excellent communicator and obviously enjoy working with people.” -Shirley Gobeil-Gravelle

Create what makes you happy

Pattern designer and video sewing classes instructor Brenda Miller.

“I love designing bags, quilts, and home decor because they are functional and fashionable and can be made entirely by the home sewist. A big part of my attraction to sewing comes from a childhood encounter with my great, great Aunt Martha. She was a dressmaker par excellence from Berlin… Using leftover fabric, Aunt Martha showed me how to make a tote bag with a zipper. It was a great beginning for a little girl interested in making things from scratch.” – Brenda Miller
