Use any fabric panel measuring around 28″ x 43″
The Window Pane Lap Quilt is an original design by Brenda Miller. This is a free pattern for those who subscribe to our newsletter. This pattern creates a lap quilt that measures 54 ¾” x 72″, and because it’s so easy and the layout so effective, it’s a wonderful option to make as a gift.
We’re showcasing it with the vibrant Oh Canada 11 fabric collection from Northcott, designed with poppies in honor of Remembrance Day, but you may adapt it by using any panel measuring around 28″ x 43″.

The inspiration behind the Window Pane pattern
One November, I thought it would be fitting to create something for Remembrance Day, leading to the Window Pane Panel Lap Quilt. This pattern tailored a Northcott panel in the Oh Canada collection. This collection panel is centered around poppies, aligning with the Remembrance Day theme.
As it happens, I was thinking I should donate the finished Remembrance Day Window Panel Quilt to the Canadian Quilts of Valour project. I must have great powers of concentration because the following morning, one of the members appeared in the store and I sent the quilt home with her for donation to the local Sarnia Chapter! This group creates quilts for injured Canadian Armed Forces members past and present, giving them a little bit of comfort with each quilt.

About the free pattern
The pattern I designed creates a basic windowpane look for any 28″ x 43″ panel, especially effective with scenic ones. Wider panels can be cut down to fit if the scene allows.
Fabric to use

You might try a panel like the Cabin View by Northcott to showcase a cottage scene or anything you like looking at through a window. There are a lot of possibilities: wildlife, floral gardens, whimsical scenes, etc.
For different looks, consider our ‘continuous yardage’ prints where the scene extends across the fabric. Our stock ebbs and flows throughout the year, but we restock regularly so if you don’t see what you need now, check back soon.
Currently, we have limited stock of Mystic Mountain, a beautiful mountain scene fabric. We’ll be bringing in more prints like Migration and Still Waters from Northcott. You’ll find them in the panel section or the continuous yardage section under fabric.
Mystic Mountain was also effectively used for a Kimono, and you can achieve a similar result with other continuous yardage prints like the Venice fabric we carry, available here as soon as we’ve restocked. To create these projects, you can use the Burda 5995 pattern we stock here at the ABQ Sewing Studio.

I hope you’ll enjoy making this free pattern designed by me, Brenda Miller.
