Table Runner & Placemats Set

You’ll love how quickly you can make these modern placemats and table runner. Even beginners should find this an easy project. Make a set for yourself or give them as a gift.

Easy as 1-2-3

Here’s how easy it is to make the Boardwalk table runner and placemat set:

1. Choose your fabric

Don’t have appropriate fabric? Our online store has what you need. Here’s all the fabric we sell.

If you like the blue version here are some fabrics I would recommend:

If you like the earth color look, here’s the fabric I used in my sample:

2. Follow the pattern to make the strip sets

Purchase your pattern here. A downloadable pdf version is available.

You’ll need to cut some width of fabric strips and sew them together three different ways. Once they are sewn together, cut them cross-wise into strips (those lines you’ll see on the diagrams are the cutting lines). I call these the three strip sets.

  • Strip Set 1
  • Strip Set 2
  • Strip Set 3

Then you alternate them as shown in the pattern and sew them together. Notice how there are no seams that touch – meaning there are no seams to match up. Easy peasy!

3. Quilt them together and bind the edges

Sew the three layers together using the easy method in the pattern. It’s all straight line stitching. First, you mark the lines and then, using your walking foot, stitch along the lines. Then bind the edges using your favourite method. You’ll be surprised at how fast and easy your set goes together.

  • Pin
  • Sew
  • Bind
Here’s mine, almost finished. The table runner is done and I just have to bind the edges of the four placemats

Show off your project

Don’t forget to submit a photo of your finished placemats and table runner to Show ‘n Tell. Every month we draw for a winner who receives a free ABQ pattern of their choice. Details here.

Be sure to view the photo gallery further down to see what others have done with this pattern!
