Voyager Bag Class At The Quilt Store in Newmarket

Voyager Bag class

The Quilt Store

This past Saturday I had the opportunity to teach at The Quilt Store in Newmarket, ON.  Some of you will also know this store as Evelyn’s Sewing Centre. Although located in a modern plaza with high ceilings, the shop has a comfortable down-home feel to it with plenty of helpful staff.

The pine floors, hanging quilts, wood display units, and plethora of cushions and bags on display really warm up what must have originally been a cold looking space.

Clodaugh Coker

So, it was no surprise to me that the owner Clodaugh Coker had been an interior designer earlier in her working career. She also received a degree in Home Economics. Life had many twists and turns in store for Clodaugh and she ended up working for IBM for over 20 years before she committed to buy the Quilt Store. Clodaugh and her husband Marty, who also just joined the business, recently expanded to open another Quilt Store in Burlington, ON. Exciting times for the Quilt Store!

Voyager Bag demonstration on a Baby Lock sewing machine

The Quilt Store is a Baby Lock dealership and I was able to demonstrate making the bag on a Baby Lock Unity sewing machine. This is the same machine I use as a Baby Lock Ambassador in Canada. My sister-in-law Kathy also worked with the Unity on our sample to help me out.

GO CANADA! Kathy’s Voyager Bag featured some of the Harpers Discover Canada fabrics.

A seven-hour class

The class itself was for the Voyager Bag, and with 16 students it made for an intense, busy day. This is a class that is best taught at a retreat. If you want to cut and sew the bag in one go I’d suggest you pencil in at least a day and a half to two days to make it.

Our class was seven hours long, but most of the students had their fabric cut ahead of time.

For those who need guidance but prefer a more leisurely pace, I have a video class for the Voyager Bag. The video lessons can be accessed at any time.

I’d like to thank the gals at The Quilt Store for a very warm welcome and my students for all of their hard work during our busy day together. Remember to send me pictures of your finished bags!

      Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for asking. I’m located near Toronto, Ontario, Canada and have never been invited to teach down your way. Thanks for the thumbs up – most appreciated!
