School starts early at the ABQ Sewing Studio with Voyager and Girlfriends Bag

Our first two bag classes at the ABQ Sewing Studio got off to a great start in mid August. Here’s a photo journal of what happened.

Voyager Bag Class

The first bag sewing class I taught at the new studio was the Voyager Bag.

Girlfriends Bag Class – Perfect for Beginners!

More fun was in store for the three lucky gals making the Girlfriends Bag at our second class at the ABQ Sewing Studio.

Ironing fabric for the Girlfriends Bag
I was pleased to have my niece, Abby Wodrich, join us. She’s a rookie sewer who drove in from Clarkston Michigan. Abby needed to learn how to use her Mom’s sewing machine, cutting and all the basics…

Mary Miller from the London area just needed a bit of encouragement and was actually quite a talented creator…
Getting ready to sew
…and Strathroy native Cheryl Keep knew how to cut and sew but enjoyed the companionship offered in this group setting. There’s room for all levels of expertise in a Girlfriends Bag class.

I love teaching the Girlfriends Bag because you are guaranteed to get it done over the course of a day-long class. Generally I start most classes at 9 am, we do our cutting and then work through till 4 pm with a short break for lunch and tasty snacks.

There are many ways to teach, and sometimes I make the bag myself along with the class. In this case I demonstrated with what’s called a ‘step out’. That’s a series of partially completed pieces that I have pre-made which show how the bag is put together.

Partially constructed Girlfriends Bag

There are lots of little tips I share along the way like how to properly press the bag as you construct it. How to insert magnets, how to do an invisible hand stitch to sew down the final piece binding at the top of the bag, etc.

Making a Girlfriends Bag

I always enjoy watching my students as they see the bag emerge from the pieces cut. You know the end is near when you only have a few cut pieces left!

And as 4 pm rolled around -what emerged but three happy gals with three Girlfriends Bags!

Nice work ladies. Go forth and sew some more!
