On a recent trip to the Brockville area I visited one of Canada’s prettiest villages, Merrickville. Merrickville lies on the historic Rideau Canal in a beautiful setting. Over time it has become a destination spot for daytrippers, boaters stopping for some shopping and a meal, and history buffs visiting the historic Block House. There is also canoe and kayak rentals if you don’t own a boat so you can enjoy a few hours on the water.
The shopping district boasts names like Mrs McGarrigle’s Fine Foods (she’s renowned for her mustard) and numerous gift, clothing and art dealers.
There are also lots of dining options and bed and breakfast establishments. On our trip we stayed at Mr. Toads Happy Place, a little two-bedroom establishment within walking distance of all the action.
Village Metalsmiths
While there I treated myself to a vanity sign made by Village Metalsmiths, Canada’s oldest operating foundry using sand casting methods that are centuries old.
Harry, Immortalized In Metal
For my sign I had them recreate Harry, my cat mascot, on a pink and white rug using their powder coating painting techniques. They already had a cat-on-a-rug option available and I left them my business card with my logo to duplicate Harry’s coloring and stripes.
Last week my new sign arrived in the mail. So if you happen to visit me in Strathroy sometime you’ll know you’ve got the right place before you ring the doorbell!
