Art Quilt By Patricia Koziol: Stuck

About Patricia

I have been sewing for close to 40 years and got into quilting when I was on maternity leave… didn’t quite know what I was getting into as that Traditional Sampler was taught through drafting templates. Each block was pieced and then hand quilted and eventually all of it to come together.  This was my first UFO…that was 20 yrs ago!!

I continued to take a number of classes for different types of projects and self-taught myself while watching Sewing with Nancy and other quilting shows. I’ve always been interested in the creative aspects of quilting and tend to gravitate more towards the non-traditional styles.  At one point I was asked (begged) if I could step in to teach a class at my local quilt store as the regular instructor took quite ill.  Apparently I did a good job faking it as afterwards I became a regular fixture at that store and taught for many years. The last owner decided to retire so I was out of the loop for many years and “doing my own thing”.

A couple of years ago that owner decided to come back in business (The Ruby and Peal Quilt Shop in Oshawa, Ont.) and invited me to return to teaching the Traditional Sampler (not taught the way I was taught I might add). That’s my hobby job.  Although I steer towards using patterns this was my first attempt at creating a quilt made entirely by me.  At one point I actually felt like backing out as I wondered what on earth had I got myself into but I’m proud that I didn’t!

I have been quilting for about 20 years; mostly self-taught.  This is the first time that I have ever designed an art quilt.

Artist’s Statement

My inspiration is the tricky balance between deforestation and the need for controlled burns to permit animals with large horns to move freely through the dense forest without becoming trapped – hence I have tried to incorporate the starkness of the effects of negative deforestation practices and the impacts to animals in the dense forest.

Materials and Techniques

Pat used cotton fabric with a cotton batting. The thread used to assemble the quilt is cotton/polyester.  Free-motion quilting and stitch in-the-ditch quilting was done using rayon thread.
