Art Quilt By Rebecca Turner: Save the Earth

About Becky

Rebecca ‘Becky’ Turner began quilting nine years ago when she retired from a long career in nursing, and she was quickly drawn to the art quilt side of quilting. It was love at first stitch! Becky actively joins workshops, reads books and joins on-line groups in order to expand her quilting knowledge and techniques. She has been an active member of the Huron Perth Quilters Guild in Kirkton, Ontario and is well known in the area for her quilting as well as her photographic skills.

Becky, always interested in the visual arts, has done several photographic facebook projects, one where she posted a picture each day for a year.  Currently she is posting on a weekly basis with pictures of her home town of St. Marys.  Becky is also interested in scrapbooking with her grandchildren and has worked in Stained Glass. She is super excited to think that her quilt will be traveling half way around the world to be seen in Taiwan. Becky is married to husband Alan. They have two sons and a daughter, and four grandkids who keep them busy with hockey and ball.  Becky also enjoys traveling and has recently visited Ireland, Scotland and Iceland – something she highly recommends.

Materials and Techniques

In making this piece Becky used her own hand dyed fabric as the background and made the tree from silk and cording. She played with the fabric until she created a shape that resembled a tree. She then computer generated and printed out the earth image on cloth, and thread painted roots and branches. To make her leaf effects she laid threads and scraps of green between 2 layers of water solvent material and sewed away.  She dissolved the material and was left with the green which she attached to her tree. Becky then used paints to do the lettering.
